Prof. Bruce J. Kirenga Shares Lessons on Planning and Implementing Research During Epidemics at University College Dublin
Prof. Bruce J. Kirenga, Principal of Makerere University College of Health Sciences and Executive Chairman of Interdisciplinary Consortium for Epidemics Research and Response (ICER), delivered a scientific seminar titled “Planning and Implementing Research During Outbreaks and Epidemics” at the Centre for Experimental Pathogen Host Research (CEPHR), University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland, on 16th September 2026.
Drawing on practical experience from epidemic research and response, Prof. Kirenga highlighted the importance of embedding research within epidemic preparedness and response systems rather than introducing it only after an outbreak has begun. His presentation emphasised advance research planning, appropriate study designs, ethical and regulatory preparedness, multidisciplinary collaboration, research infrastructure and the ability to rapidly activate scientifically rigorous studies during public-health emergencies.

The seminar also provided an opportunity for scientific exchange with researchers at UCD and reinforced the importance of international partnerships in strengthening epidemic research capacity.
For ICER, the engagement reflects its commitment to advancing African-led epidemic research, preparedness and response, while building partnerships that enable evidence generated during outbreaks to inform clinical practice, public-health interventions and future preparedness.
The seminar also consolidates the research collaboration with UCD through the VERPI and MPOXVAX AFRIVAC projects.
